This short paper (8 pages) draws together evidence of the role played by inequality in the creation of the climate crisis:
The Social Barriers to Sustainability
A shortened version was also published in the June 2010 edition of New Internationalist.
IT SEEMS that there will be no civilised solution to the problem of climate change, till we address the social injustices that drive it. This means tackling inequality head-on and world-wide (and yes, it means ditching the current, neurotic obsession with 'strong borders'). But if we do find the collective courage to do this, we will get results rapidly.
The paper draws together evidence from history and archaeology as well as recent data on the impacts of inequality, and briefly describes the two main mechanisms through which it does the damage.
I hope you like it and find it useful. If you do, please circulate it. And let me know what you think.
